CSE Supervising Philosophy

The Center for Student Engagement believes the role of the student employee supervisor is to support student employees in their work to create opportunities for all students to “Get Connected” and “Get Involved.” Supervisors challenge student employees to think critically and grow in their positions. As supervisors, we commit to the following values and actions.

Enhance and build community

Supervisors provide opportunities for student employees to connect and build relationships with one another. We strive to create spaces where all students feel they matter and belong within the department and campus community.

Creating an environment that encourages student well-being

Supervisors seek to recognize the harmony between a student employee’s academic and co-curricular responsibilities. We foster an environment where student employees can participate in a welcoming space that promotes wellness by connecting them with tools to be successful.

Teach responsible decision making

Supervisors challenge student employees to act with integrity and make positive decisions utilizing critical thinking. We task student employees with the responsibility of acting as good stewards of funds and teach them the impact of their actions and decisions on the greater campus community.

Developing authentic student leaders

Supervisors facilitate employee retreats, development opportunities, encourage strengths-based learning, and other practices that are key to personal and professional success. We develop emotionally intelligent, self-authored, student employees who influence positive change.

Prioritize opportunities for applied learning

Supervisors create and promote opportunities for student employees to apply knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to hands-on projects in a co-curricular setting. Student employees will not only gain transferable skills, but also an awareness of those skills and the ability to utilize them in future educational and career goals.
